Engineering Data for
Vinyl and Fiberglass Pergolas
Backyard America's Potomac vinyl pergola and Williamsburg
fiberglass pergola meet code requirements for winds zones up to
140 MPH exposure C. Independent testing and analysis by a
Florida licensed Professional Engineer has resulted in a standard
drawing package for freestanding and attached models with both
square and round columns. In most cases this package, which is
included in the price of our pergolas, will be sufficient for
obtaining a building permit. For building officials who require a
"wet stamp", this is available for an additional charge.
As far as we know, these are the only production pergola kits to
meet the rigorous requirements designed to withstand hurricane type
winds with coastal exposure. Backyard America has selected
materials of the highest quality and designed hardware specifically
to withstand these extreme conditions. The pergolas were
tested as a complete system and the kits must be purchased and
installed as designed to comply with the code requirements.
Who needs this package? Most customers live in areas where
there is no building permit required to install a pergola. However
there are city and county governments which do require that a
building permit before constructing this type of structure. With
thousands of different jurisdictions in the US we have no way of
knowing if you need a permit to install a pergola kit. The only sure
way of knowing is to call your building department and ask them if
there are any requirements that you must meet prior to construction.
If you need to obtain a permit, we believe that our engineering
package will meet your needs - but there is no guarantee. Please
call and speak to one of our senior estimators for more information
on our engineering package and how to use it.
