Building Codes
Typically a building permit is not required for outdoor structures that have an area of less than 150 square feet and that are placed on the ground without frost footings. Many localities do not require a permit for pergolas. We would like to tell you with absolute certainty whether or not a permit is required and if so what type of information is required, but we can't. The range of requirements goes from none to complete engineering drawings. It is particularly important to understand local footing, snow load, and wind uplift requirements.

ALTHOUGH MOST STATES FOLLOW THE ICC BUILDING CODE, THE CODE MAY BE INTERPRETED DIFFERENTLY BY LOCAL BUILDING OFFICIALS. ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL BUILDING DEPARTMENT TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THE BUILDING CODE. In many cases we can provide engineering data, if required, to assist in obtaining a permit; however if PE stamped drawings are required there will usually be an additional charge.

ZONING and HOA

In addition to building code and permit considerations, you may also need to meet local zoning or Home Owner Association requirements regarding the placement, design, color, and type of materials used for the structure.

ALWAYS CHECK WITH LOCAL OFFICIALS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND ALL BUILDING CODE, ZONING, AND HOA REQUIREMENTS BEFORE ORDERING A PERGOLA OR GAZEBO. THESE PRODUCTS ARE MADE TO ORDER AND CANNOT BE RETURNED.
